TORONTO – February 5, 2018 – A Grade 12 high school student using a FREE lifesaving app called Mikey Young at Heart, has put her newfound knowledge to work by recently saving a stranger who had collapsed on a downtown Toronto street.
With February designated as Heart Month and Valentine’s Day just ahead, this heartwarming story shines the spotlight on the importance of teaching students how to help those experiencing Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) to possibly save a life
“I knew CPR because I went through the Mikey Young at Heart App which gave me the confidence to act immediately and without fear,” says Kayley. “I knew what to do and I knew if I did it correctly, this man would have a better chance of survival.”

The Mikey Network places MIKEYs (public access defibrillators) in high schools, so that those who experience SCA on school property might have a second chance at life. And, students get volunteer hours as credit for their learning these lifesaving skills. To date, the Mikey Young at Heart program has placed over 500 MIKEYs in Toronto, Peel, Halton and Limestone District schools as well as in Halton’s Catholic District schools.
Said Mikey Network Chairman Hugh Heron, “Because of this program, four students, a teacher and a member of the community have all been saved because a MIKEY was immediately available.”
Said Mikey Network President Eva Naumovski, “It takes just over three hours to watch the videos and complete the quizzes on the Mikey Young at Heart App. As an extra benefit to students, these hours may be earned towards the volunteer requirement for high school students and repeated every year.”
The Mikey Network was named for Mike Salem, a partner at Heathwood Homes and Herity who died tragically of sudden cardiac arrest while golfing in 2002. Heathwood and Herity established The Mikey Network in 2003 as a tribute to the man known for his compassion and consideration. To date there have been over 2,300 Mikeys placed across Canada, and 36 lives have been saved with Mikey defibrillators.
