SEVEN RETAILERS CONFIRMED AT CANARY DISTRICT

TORONTO, April 7, 2015 – DUNDEE KILMER DEVELOPMENTS L.P. has announced seven new retailers who have been signed to locate at The Canary District, the innovative new community, originally mapped as the home of the CIBC Athletes Village at the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Games.
“We are attracting the ‘best of the best’ retail operators.” said Dundee Kilmer President Jason Lester. “We know this mix of services will go a long way towards contributing to the healthy lifestyle of Canary District residents and the positive well-being and atmosphere of this engaged neighbourhood.”
The new retailers are Dark Horse Espresso Bar, Fuel Plus, OpusGlow Concept Spa, Pizza e Pazzi, Tabule Middle Eastern Cuisine, The Running Room and Think Fitness Studio.
These retailers, whom are amongst the GTA’s top locally owned and operated businesses, were secured through Dundee Kilmer’s partnership in this project with LiveWorkLearnPlay Inc., an international real estate development and advisory firm, recognized as leading North American experts in the development of large-scale mixed-use projects and the revitalization of neighbourhoods.
“We take a focused approach with our branded Targeted Leasing and Casting (TLCTM) process to securing best-in-class retailers which has proven very successful for the project,” said LiveWorkLearnPlay Partner & Principal Rob Spanier. “We curated the ground floor retail uses by choosing amongst the best and most appropriate operators to fit within the health and wellness theme of Canary District. Retailers appreciate our rigorous approach as ultimately, it ensures their long term success at a location, which is beneficial to their business, the developer and the community overall.”
Added Lester, “We took a similar approach in selecting commercial tenants for the Distillery District when it was transformed from Toronto’s historic Gooderham & Worts Distillery. Since its re-opening in 2003, the Distillery District has become a thriving commercial and residential success.”
One of the retail tenants, Fuel Plus, is a café offering protein shakes, specialty coffee drinks and healthy food options and works with the Canadian Institute of Holistic Nutrition on nutrition education initiatives. OpusGlow Concept Spa is a full-service day spa offering a diversity of wellness and beauty services.
Two restaurants are among the new retail additions. Pizza e Pazzi, one of the highest rated pizza destinations in the city, is a traditional Neapolitan pizzeria and Italian restaurant, while Tabule Middle Eastern Cuisineis consistently ranked as one of the healthiest and best restaurants in Toronto.
“To become part of a community that fosters health and wellness is truly sensational,” said Diana Sideris, Owner, Tabule Restaurant Inc. “Our concept of fresh, casual and healthy dining not only lends to the unique aspect of this area, but will also stand tall with the other amazing retailers that have been invited to be a part of this innovative community. Tabule has always been dedicated to the neighbourhoods it serves and we are excited to expand our footprint and community involvement in the Canary District.”
When fully built, the 46,000 square feet of ground floor retail space along Cherry St. and Bayview Ave. will also be home to Think Fitness Studio, a highly personalized fitness studio specializing in small group training and one on one personal training. They add to studio training with unique seasonal events and fitness adventures to build and cultivate healthy, positive fitness habits.
Opening as well is Dark Horse Espresso Bar, a pioneer of Toronto’s café culture, devoted to creating community-focused café environments that become essential parts of their urban surroundings.
“Dark Horse Espresso Bar is thrilled to be a part of the Canary District, a significant new development in the city,” said Deanna Zunde, Co-Founder of Dark Horse. “We strongly believe in this inclusive neighbourhood that is meeting the needs of the community while setting an example for urban design in Canada, and we look forward to joining and building a café that our customers will be proud to make home.”
The Running Room will also be opening a location. They are North America’s largest specialty running and walking retailer of sporting goods, apparel and footwear with 114 locations, offering weekly running clubs and training programs for all levels of runners, designed to educate customers on a lifestyle of fitness.
